Chionetti Dogliani Langhe Nebbiolo La Chiusa DOC 2014
Ruby red with purple hints, this Nebbiolo is seriously alluring! Aromas are of small red berries enriched with spicy notes of licorice and floral nuances of violet and lavender. The mouth is soft, balanced and characterized by good freshness and equally good persistence. You’ll wish you had a larger glass to enjoy this beauty!
The Chionetti winery is one of the best-known wineries in Piemonte’s Dogliani with a great tradition of making various single-vineyard Dogliani DOC & DOCG wines. The history of the Chionetti family has been linked to the vine from the 19th century. The turning point came in 1912 when Giuseppe Chionetti bought the farm in a suitable area for vineyards in San Luigi in the town of Dogliani. The vineyards from which they source their grapes are located in the Langhe wine region which was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2014.
Nebbiolo is the grape variety behind the top-quality red wines of Piedmont in north-western Italy, the most notable of which are Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are distinguished by their strong tannins, high acidity and distinctive scent – often described as "tar and roses". Nebbiolo is the quintessential Piedmontese wine grape – the dominant variety in five of the region's DOCGs and numerous DOCs. Even its name evokes the region's foothills on cool autumn mornings, when the valleys and vineyards lie hidden under a ghostly blanket of nebbia (fog). The name is very apt for this late-ripening variety, which is harvested later in the year than Piedmont's other key varieties (Barbera and particularly Dolcetto), in foggy, wintry weather conditions.
